The football world spent nearly two decades debating who deserved the title of the greatest player of all time: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Yet, according to former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón, there was once a dream of seeing both superstars wearing the famous white shirt of Real Madrid.
In a recent interview, Calderón opened up about the possibility of bringing Messi and Ronaldo together at the Santiago Bernabéu, describing it as an extraordinary ambition that ultimately proved impossible to achieve.
The Dream of Uniting Football’s Two Greatest Icons
Calderón played a key role in securing Cristiano Ronaldo’s historic move from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009. At the time, the Portuguese star arrived for a world-record transfer fee, while Lionel Messi was dominating Spanish football with Barcelona.
Looking back, Calderón admitted that pairing the two legends in the same team would have been the ultimate sporting achievement.
However, the fierce rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona made such a scenario virtually impossible.
“I would have loved it, but it was impossible,” Calderón told Portuguese newspaper A Bola. “Messi belonged to Barcelona, and they would never have allowed him to leave unless he wanted to, just as Cristiano did at Manchester United.”
Why Messi Could Never Join Real Madrid
According to Calderón, Messi’s strong connection with Barcelona, combined with the political and emotional significance of the club in Catalonia, made any potential transfer to Real Madrid unrealistic.
The Argentine superstar was happy at Barcelona and had no intention of leaving during his peak years, effectively ending any hopes of seeing him alongside Ronaldo.
“It was unfortunate because having the two best players in the world on the same team would have been incredible,” Calderón added.
The Long Road to Signing Cristiano Ronaldo
While Messi remained out of reach, Real Madrid spent years pursuing Ronaldo before finally completing the blockbuster transfer in 2009.
Calderón revealed that negotiations lasted nearly two years, with Manchester United determined to keep their star player. However, Ronaldo's desire to play for Real Madrid eventually proved decisive.
“When players of Cristiano’s level want to move somewhere, it becomes very difficult to stop them,” Calderón explained. “At that moment, he was one of the two best players in the world, so signing him was an opportunity we simply could not miss.”
Ronaldo’s Departure: A Mistake for Everyone?
Despite Ronaldo’s extraordinary success in Madrid, Calderón believes his departure to Juventus in 2018 was a mistake for both the player and the club.
The former president suggested that tensions between Ronaldo and Florentino Pérez gradually damaged their relationship, eventually leading to the Portuguese star's exit.
“I think it was a mistake on both sides,” Calderón said. “The relationship deteriorated over time, and the club underestimated the possibility of another team paying such a significant fee.”
Calderón also argued that Ronaldo never fully replicated his Real Madrid success elsewhere, while Madrid struggled to find a player capable of replacing his incredible impact.
A Football What-If That Will Live Forever
The idea of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing together remains one of football’s greatest unanswered questions. While the dream never became reality, Calderón’s comments offer a fascinating glimpse into what could have been one of the most remarkable partnerships in sports history.
